Fifteen minutes before it was scheduled to begin, a special meeting of the Jefferson County Quorum Court was cancelled Monday.

The meeting had been called by Justice of the Peace Lloyd Franklin Jr. who said in a text message to members of the media he was cancelling it “at the request of several JP’s.”

Franklin called the meeting to discuss a proposed ordinance setting out procedures for the Quorum Court to operate for the next two years after disagreeing with the proposed ordinance created by County Judge Gerald Robinson.

That ordinance failed to be approved, causing Robinson to cancel the regular February meeting of the quorum court before any action could be taken.

After Franklin sent out his notice about the special meeting Monday, Robinson said an e-mail to the media as well as members of the Quorum Court saying it was done “without my consent and I do not concur with this special call meeting.”

Franklin responded to that by saying Robinson’s comments “are merely an attempt by him to give some preconceived notion or suggest this special called meeting is improper or illegal which couldn’t be further from the truth. The County Judge’s comments are noted without merit.”

The proposed ordinance is the first item on the agenda for committees of the Quorum Court when they meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the courthouse. That agenda also includes all the business that was not taken care of in February.
