The filing period for political candidates has now closed and six candidates will be on the ballot for Mayor in the March Democratic primary.

According to a list from the Jefferson Count Clerk’s Office, incumbent Mayor Shirley Washington will face a challenge from former council member Joni Alexander Robinson, current State Representative Vivian Flowers, current Council Member Steven Mays, former Parks and Recreation Director Samuel Glover and political newcomer Charles Washington.

Community activist John Fenley will seek the mayor’s position in the November General Election. Fenley is running as a Libertarian.

Current City Clerk Janice L. Roberts is opposed by Mary Liddell and current City Treasurer Gregory Gustek will face opposition from former City Clerk Loretta Whitfield.

All four members of the council who are on the ballot drew opponents with First Ward Council Member Lloyd Holcomb Jr., being opposed by Marlette Boales; Second Ward Council Member Steven Shaner facing Yvonne Denton; Third Ward Council Member Glen Brown Sr., drawing two opponents, Kenneth Gray Sr., and William Fells, and Fourth Ward 4 Council Member Bruce Lockett facing Mar’Tavius Proctor.

All of those candidates are running as Democrats.
