The City of Sheridan is considering an increase in its water and sewer rates.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, the city is currently losing money producing the water it sells to customers.

A proposed ordinance that was read for the first time at the Jan. 2 meeting would increase water rates to a minimum $11 base rate for the first 1,000 gallons used and an additional $4.35 per 1,000 gallons over the minimum.

New sewer rates would start at $8.57 base rate for the first 1,000 gallons used with a rate of $2.68 per 1,000 gallons over the minimum used.

The ordinance will be read for a second time at the February meeting with a third and final reading taking place in March.

The newspaper reported that Mayor Cain Nattin said if the rate increase is not approved, the Arkansa Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Division could take control of the city’s water rates and set the amount customers are charged.
