Governor Asa Hutchinson announced earlier today that there has been a confirmed case of the Coronavirus in Pine Bluff and the patient is currently in isolation.

The governor also declared a public health emergency because of coronavirus, which has infected more than 1,000 people in the United States and killed at least 30.

The patient had traveled out of state recently but had no known international travel, the governor said.

Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington has been working closely with officials and released the following statement regarding the Coronavirus.

As you know, the city has recently been informed that a patient has tested positive for COVID-19, the coronavirus, at Jefferson Regional earlier today. It is designated a presumptive positive at this time, which means the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will need to investigate and confirm the accuracy of the test result. Nevertheless, the City of Pine Bluff is committed to working with the federal government, the state of Arkansas, Jefferson County, and Jefferson Regional to monitor this situation. For now, however, we advise all residents to stay informed and adhere to proper health protocols.

To protect your health, you should:
-Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue, and discard the tissue after use.
-Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces with cleaning wipes or spray.
-Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds on a regular basis.
-Stay home when you are sick, except if you must leave to seek medical attention.
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
-Refrain from hugging and shaking hands.
-Refrain from touching door handles. Use sleeves if possible.
-Avoid all out of state travel.

The CDC lists fever, cough, and shortness of breath as symptoms of COVID-19. The public is encouraged to not panic. However, if an individual feels sick, that person should contact his or her healthcare provider, who will be able to provide specific instructions on COVID-19 testing. If you have any additional questions or concerns, you may contact the Arkansas Department of Health’s Call Center at 1-800-803-7847 or visit www.cdc.gov.
