Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington on Wednesday announced a new program designed to improve the future of students in the city.

Appearing on the Oldies 1013 morning show, Washington talked about the program.

Washington will host a town hall meeting at the Pine Bluff Convention Center beginning at 6 p.m. tonight to introduce the program

She said the program is designed to make sure students are ready for a successful future by introducing an educational plan to guarantee success after high school.

Washington was asked about the El Dorado Promise, an effort by Murphy Oil that guarantees that every student who graduates from high school in El Dorado will have money for college.

Later in the interview, Washington was asked what can be done to prepare kids for college when ACT scores in Pine Bluff average about 15 or “are we just here to talk about college?”

She went on to say that the program was one she has wanted to do since she took office and while she’s not quite sure how it’s going to work, you have to start somewhere.
