The U.S. Mint has announced the release of a limited run of commemorative quarters that will soon enter circulation across the country ahead of Independence Day.

According to the Mint, 250,000 special 2026 Declaration of Independence quarters will be randomly distributed through banks and financial institutions nationwide. The coins will be mixed in with standard circulation quarters rather than sold directly to collectors.

Each of the limited-edition coins will feature a “July 4th” privy mark tied to America’s 250th anniversary. The mark replaces the coin’s traditional mint mark, a small identifier that typically indicates where a coin was produced.

The obverse of the quarter will continue to feature Thomas Jefferson, along with the dual date “1776–2026,” marking the nation’s semi-quincentennial. The reverse will depict the Liberty Bell, including its recognizable crack, as part of the commemorative design.

The Mint said the program is intended to allow Americans to encounter the anniversary celebration through everyday transactions, rather than through collectible-only releases.

The coins will be distributed into circulation in the weeks leading up to Independence Day, with availability depending on random distribution through financial institutions.

Officials said the quarter is part of broader updates to U.S. coinage tied to the 250th anniversary, which include design adjustments and commemorative markings across multiple denominations.

Because the coins are standard legal tender placed into circulation, they will not be available for direct purchase through the Mint.

More information on the program can be found through the official U.S. Mint website.
