Dr. Yathish Ramena, director for the Aquaculture/Fisheries Center of Excellence at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), has been inducted into the Arkansas Research Alliance (ARA) Academy as an Arkansas Research Fellow.
According to the ARA, its fellows program recognizes researchers whose work advances innovation, strengthens Arkansas’ knowledge economy and exemplifies the belief that “research matters.”
Dr. Ramena received the recognition during the ARA Academy Induction Ceremony recently at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock. The event honored a select group of researchers from across the state who have demonstrated excellence in both fundamental and applied research while making significant contributions to Arkansas’ scientific and economic development.
The ceremony brought together university leaders, researchers, industry partners and policymakers from across Arkansas.
New Academy members were selected by their respective chancellors and institutional leaders based on their commitment to advancing research that addresses critical challenges and creates opportunities for innovation throughout the state.
Dr. Ramena was formally inducted into the ARA Academy by Dr. Ritter Arnold, chair of the Arkansas Research Alliance Board of Trustees, and Dr. Bryan Barnhouse, president and chief executive officer of the Arkansas Research Alliance. Joining the celebration was Dr. Anthony Graham, chancellor of UAPB, who recognized Dr. Ramena’s contributions to research, innovation and student success.
“Dr. Yathish Ramena’s induction into the Arkansas Research Alliance Academy is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of his dedication to excellence in research and innovation,” Dr. Graham said. “His work continues to elevate the research profile of UAPB while contributing meaningful solutions to challenges facing our communities, industries and the state of Arkansas.”
The Arkansas Research Alliance Academy recognizes researchers who have established records of impactful scholarship and innovation while fostering collaborations that support economic growth and technological advancement.
Arkansas Research Fellows are selected based on their research accomplishments, leadership, mentorship and ability to translate scientific discoveries into meaningful societal and economic benefits.
According to Dr. Ramena, his research project will advance precision aquaculture research and Extension programs at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s Center of Excellence for Aquaculture and Fisheries by integrating artificial intelligence, advanced data analytics and innovative aquaculture systems.
Its primary goal is to develop practical technologies that help aquaculture producers improve efficiency, sustainability and profitability while expanding high-performance computing capabilities to support large-scale data analysis, predictive modeling and future AI-driven solutions.
Dr. Ramena said the initiative also emphasizes collaboration among research, education, Extension and industry partners to ensure new technologies are accessible and useful to producers.
Through workshops, demonstrations, hands-on training and outreach activities, UAPB will deliver research findings directly to farmers, students and other stakeholders.
By fostering partnerships with aquaculture producers, technology companies and Arkansas-based energy and lithium industries, the project aims to accelerate technology adoption, support workforce development, encourage entrepreneurship and strengthen Arkansas’s position as a leader in technology-driven aquaculture innovation.
“Throughout his career, Dr. Ramena has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing scientific knowledge through innovative research and interdisciplinary collaboration,” Dr. Christopher C. Mathis Jr., interim dean/director for UAPB’s School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences, said. “His work has attracted external funding, created opportunities for student engagement in research and contributed to the development of solutions with real-world applications.”
Dr. Mathis added that through strategic partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies and industry stakeholders, Dr. Ramena has helped elevate Arkansas’s reputation as a center for innovation, research excellence and technological advancement.
His contributions continue to foster discovery, economic growth and workforce development across the state and beyond.
“I am deeply honored to be inducted into the Arkansas Research Alliance Academy as an Arkansas Research Fellow,” Dr. Ramena said. “This recognition reflects the collective efforts of my students, colleagues, collaborators and the support of UAPB leadership.
I remain committed to conducting impactful research, mentoring future scientists and advancing innovations that benefit Arkansas and beyond.”
As UAPB continues to expand its research enterprise and strengthen its role as a leader in higher education and innovation, Dr. Ramena’s induction into the ARA Academy highlights the university’s growing impact on scientific discovery, workforce development and economic growth across the state, Dr. Mathis said.
