McGehee Mayor Jeff Owyoung has announced he will not seek reelection when his term expires at the end of this year.
In a lengthy statement to the McGehee Dermott Times News, Owyoung said “After much prayer and careful consideration, I have made one of the most difficult and emotional decisions of my life. After more than a decade of dedicated service to the City of McGehee, I will not be seeking reelection after 12 years of unforgettable years of service as your mayor.”
Owyoung said McGehee is “more than just a city for me. It’s where my roots are, where my memories have been made, and where so many people I love call home.”
He said in the statement that more than $18 million in grants have been brought into the community supporting renovations to the hospital, updated improvements to the water and sewer system, critical street repairs, beautiful pocket parks and vast enhancements to our parks and ballparks.
He thanked city employees, members of the council and citizens who trusted and supported him.
“McGehee’s future is bright and I have full confidence in the leaders who will step forward to continue the work we have begun,” Owyoung said in the statement.
