A new camera system will be installed in the Drew County Detention Center in the near future after the quorum court approved funding for it.
According to the Advance Monticellonian newspaper, at a previous meeting, the county’s legislative body approved $212,583.41 for the camera system, and at its most recent meeting, added $70,229.59.
The total cost of the system is $282,813 and Sheriff Tim Nichols said the camera system will be paid for with revenue from a $5 booking fee.
Also during the meeting, the county’s legislators agreed to look for grant funding to pay for an industrial magnetic sweeper device to be used at the landfill.
According to the newspaper, the county could receive up to $5,000 from the Southeast Arkansas Economic Development District with some conditions on the way the money is spent.
County Judge Jesse Griffin said the magnetic sweeper would qualify and would be used to help keep the roads and public dumping areas free of nails and sharp metal objects, decreasing the possibility of tire punctures.
