The mother of a man who died while in the adult detention center last year has filed a lawsuit  against the jail and Jefferson County.

Deborah McBride, the mother of Dezman McBride filed the suit in Jefferson County Circuit Court Tuesday and alleged grossly negligent treatment and intentional maltreatment of McBride, who had been arrested May 21,2021 on a failure to appear warrant. He died at Jefferson Regional Hospital on June 5

The lawsuit alleged that McBride was injured after he was involved in a fight with another inmate on June 1. It went on to claim that McBride was not evaluated by a nurse or other medical personnel even though he complained of pain and fatigue.

Also alleged in the lawsuit was that the actions of jail personnel were willful and wanton in disregarding the rights and safety of others

McBride’s mother claims she has suffered mental anguish and is asking for more than $200,000 for pain. Suffering and medical expenses. She is also asking for a jury trial.
