The Grant County Quorum Court is looking at creating a women’s jail in the old First Baptist Church building the county recently bought.

According to the Sheridan Headlight newspaper, the justices of the peace at their Aug. 15 meeting talked about that possibility with JP Grant Westmoreland, chairman of the buildings and grounds committee presenting the idea.

Grant County does not operate its own jail, instead using the Sheridan Detention Center, which is operated by the city, and renting bed space.

Westmoreland suggested a swap with the city with the county holding female prisoners and the city holding males.

According to the newspaper. members of the Quorum Court seemed receptive to the idea but the meeting was adjourned without a final decision.
