With the continued hot weather and more people being outside around the water, mosquitos are becoming a big issue in the Deltaplex. With more mosquitos comes the problem of West Nile Virus.

Neighboring Oklahoma just had their first West Nile related death. Dr. Sylvia Simon from the Jefferson Regional clinic in Monticello joined Rick Walker on Sunrise Deltaplex to talk about the disease. She said she hasn’t treated anyone this season, but Southeast Arkansas has had a history of problems with the virus.

Dr. Simon said that it is not just those with underlying conditions that can suffer from the virus.

She added that there is a reason this part of the state has seen cases of West Nile

Although person to person transmission hasn’t been shown to happen, pregnant mothers can be affected
