During its meeting Tuesday night, the Pine Bluff City Council split 4-4 on a resolution permitting the city to spend $68,000 to hire a company to remove asbestos from the old Southeast School on Ohio Street which the city has purchased.

On Wednesday, Council Member Joni Alexander who cast one of the four no votes said the mayor’s office had approached the council about approving the funds and said she was on board with the idea, but during a meeting of a council committee, found out it was going to cost $700,000 to tear down the building on the school campus.

Appearing on the Oldies 1013 morning show Wednesday, Alexander said that if she was going to do something on property she owns and was waiting on a loan, she wouldn’t do anything until she knew how much money was coming to pay for the project, and how much money was not.

She went on to confirm that no asbestos will be taken out right now.
