Cowboys and cowgirls from across the country are expected to make their way to Pine Bluff this weekend as the Black Rodeo Takeover returns for its fourth year at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, and organizers say more than 100 competitors are expected to participate in this year’s rodeo events. Competitors will also be competing for a $10,000 prize payout during the event.
Founded by Daniel Moore when he was 19 years old, the rodeo has continued to grow each year while focusing on highlighting Black cowboy culture and creating a family-oriented atmosphere for the community.
In addition to the rodeo competitions, organizers have planned activities geared toward younger attendees, including mutton busting and a calf scramble. Moore said one of the goals of the event is introducing young people to experiences and activities they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to explore.
The event will also feature several musical performances from entertainers with ties to Pine Bluff and surrounding communities.
Among those scheduled to appear is Mikiyah Mustiful, who recently competed on American Idol. Additional performances are planned from G Pace and his band out of Monticello as well as Pine Bluff performer Brian King Jr.
Organizers say the Black Rodeo Takeover is designed to provide entertainment for all ages while also celebrating a part of rodeo history and culture that is often overlooked.
