For the first time in state history, Arkansas lawmakers have formed the Arkansas Rural Electric Cooperative Caucus, aimed at advocating for the interests of cooperative consumer-members across the state.
The caucus is designed to provide lawmakers with information needed to make informed decisions about Arkansas’ energy future, with a focus on issues such as reliability, affordability and economic development as the energy industry continues to evolve.
The group will emphasize education on current energy sources, emerging technologies, industry trends and the growing demand for electricity. Plans also include tours of energy generation facilities across Arkansas to give members a firsthand look at production and infrastructure.
The caucus recently held its first meeting, which included a presentation from Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation President and CEO Vernon “Buddy” Hasten. The presentation addressed rising energy demands, particularly related to data centers, and ongoing development of natural gas generation in the state.
Rep. Jack Ladyman will serve as House chairman of the caucus, while Sen. Matt McKee will serve as Senate chairman. Rep. Jason Nazarenko and Sen. Matt Stone will serve as vice chairmen.
Lawmakers say the caucus will meet throughout the year to provide continued education and discussion on energy-related issues affecting Arkansas.
