Clearwater Paper Co. has announced it will be cutting production in half at its Cypress Bend solid bleached sulfate (SBS) mill and eliminating up to 70 jobs.
According to the McGehee Dermott Times-News, about 50 employees will be laid off and 20 vacant positions will not be filled. This action is expected to save $8 to $12 million annually while keeping shipment levels steady.
The Cypress Bend mill opened in 1977 by Potlatch Corp. and is now operated by Clearwater Paper which has invested in upgrades and acquisitions.
The plant has been a major employer in the region.
The company said it will work with the union representing employees to provide severance packages, healthcare subsidies and outplacement assistance.
