During the meeting of the Pine Bluff City Council on Tuesday, a resolution calling on Mayor Shirley Washington to restart the hiring process for a news police chief failed by a 4-4 vote.

The resolution said “public safety is promoted by stability in the Police Department which is promoted by having a permanent chief of police.”

On Wednesday, Council member Joni Alexander was a guest on the Oldies 101.3 morning show and was asked about the resolution, particularly since the Mayor announced publicly that she would wait to fill the position until the issue of salaries is worked out.

Last year, Washington was prepared to hire a new chief, but some members of the council opposed the selection and the hiring broke down over salary issues.
