WEEVILS SECURE SERIES WIN WITH 11-1 VICTORY

ADA, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team earned the series victory over East Central on the road with a decisive win in game three Saturday. The Weevils’ offense put together their fourth consecutive double-digit hit performance to pick up an 11-1 win and take the series.

UAM improves to 7-11 on the season and 7-8 in Great American Conference play. ECU drops to 4-15 overall and 4-11 in league contests.

Trey Forsythe got the offense rolling early for the Weevils smashing a two-run home run in the top of the second to put UAM on the board first.

Starter River Hunt had a pair of scoreless frames to begin the game, but ECU was able to strike for its only run of the contest in the bottom of the third on an RBI-triple. Hunt bounced back retiring the next two batters to keep the score at 2-1.

UAM responded right back in the top half of the fourth as the first three hitters reached to load the bases before Andrew Piraino picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice and Jordan Johnson followed with a run scoring single.

Hunt worked out of a bases loaded jam in the home half of the frame to maintain the UAM lead at 4-1.

The Weevils broke the game open in the top of the sixth plating five runs on three hits and three costly Tiger errors. With the bases loaded Aaron Gaela drove a two-run single back up the middle into center field. In the next at bat Forsythe brought home another run with a sacrifice fly to drive in Dylan Borman. Two batters later Hudson Hopkins capped off the frame for the Weevils with a two-run triple into right center field that put UAM up 9-1.

The Weevils would turn to the bullpen in the sixth as Ojani Chacon worked a scoreless frame.

UAM tacked on two more runs in the top half of the seventh on a two-run single by Gaela that brought home Borman and Johnson to put the to put an exclamation point on the Weevils’ day at the plate.

Chacon returned to bump in the final frame to close out the contest with a 1-2-3 inning and deliver UAM the 11-1 win.

The Weevils were led by Gaela and Forsythe at the dish registering four and three runs driven in, respectivley.

All nine starters recorded at least one hit for UAM with four putting together multi-hit performances.

Hunt (W, 4-0) picked up the win allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six  in 5.0 innings of work.

Chacon closed down the contest pitching 2.0 scoreless frames while adding two strike outs.

Jonny Chavez (L, 1-3) took the loss surrendering four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings on the mound.

The Weevils are back in action Friday, April 2, on the road against Harding University. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
