The City of Pine Bluff is planning a new initiative designed to reduce blight and improve neighborhoods.

Called the Green Sweep, the city will be teaming up with the Urban Renewal Agency and a community forum to explain the program is set for Tuesday at the First Assembly of God Church, West campus at 3206 Hazel Street from 6 to 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Mayor Shirley Washington appeared on TalkBack Live and explained the program.

The Mayor said the effort will begin in the Urban Renewal area between 17th and 34th Avenues from Olive to Hazel Street. Code Enforcement Officers, city officials, volunteers, police, and fire department personnel will start on 34th, going street by street, house by house by house to enforce city codes as needed.

Asked by Donald if that meant that homeowners could receive citations or tickets for violations, Washington said yes.

She was also asked if she was concerned that there would be “blowback” from people who don’t want to see change and answered this way.
