In her first interview since she won the Democratic Party’s nomination for Mayor of Pine Bluff, current state representative Vivian Flowers said Wednesday she knows she still has at least one opponent in November but is trying to get prepared to take office in January.
Appearing on the Oldies 1013 Morning Show, Flowers said this.
Flowers defeated current Mayor Shirley Washington in a run-off and will face John Fenley, who has announced his candidacy as an independent. With a filing deadline in July, other candidates can still enter the race, but not any of those who also ran in the Democratic primary.
She said she favors asking for a sales tax increase, comparable to the current five-eights cent Go Forward tax which will sunset in September and was not extended by voters. That tax could be a five-eights cent tax or a one cent tax, she said, but unlike the current Go Forward tax, would be controlled by the council.
Flowers said she had talked to Washington about putting that tax on the November ballot but no decision has been reached. Deltaplex News has been told Washington said no but the Council still could take action with a minimum of five votes in favor of putting the tax on the ballot.
