UAPB Women’s Hoops: Walker’s Perfect Night Lifts Lady Lions In Redemption Win Over Southern 74-59

BATON ROUGE, LA – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench on the way to a 74-59 victory over the Southern Jaguars on the road Saturday.

The Lady Lions (9-10, 4-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Kaila Walker, who had 21 points shooting a perfect 100% from the field. Coriah Beck tacked on 13 points and Zaay Green chipped in as well with 10 points and four assists.

UAPB grabbed 25 rebounds in Saturday’s game compared to Southern’s  22, led by five boards from Kourtney Rittenberry.

The UAPB defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday’s game, forcing 20 Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Maori Davenport led the way individually for the Lady Lions with one steal.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run to take an early lead with 7:55 left in the first quarter. The Lady Lions then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 16-9 advantage. UAPB capitalized on three Southern turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

UAPB built that first quarter lead to 25-14 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 5:45 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Rittenberry, to increase its lead to 34-14. The Jaguars cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 40-22 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB forced eight Southern turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.

After intermission, UAPB added to its advantage and owned a 56-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.

The Lady Lions then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. UAPB got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
