UAPB Women’s Hoops: Hot Shooting Night Help Lady Lions Advance In SWAC Tourney Over Alabama A&M 82-74

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Led by a 65 percent shooting performance from deep, the UAPB women’s basketball team beat the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 82-74 at Bartow Arena Thursday in the quarterfinals of the SWAC Tournament.

The Lady  Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Zaay Green, who had 32 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Kaila Walker added 22 points and Tia Morgan helped out with 10 points and five assists.

UAPB shared the ball well in Thursday’s game, racking up 16 assists on 25 made field goals. Green’s eight assists paced the Lady Lions.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 10-4 advantage, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 5:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Green, to increase its lead to 17-4. The Lady Lions then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 26-11 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 26 points.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 5:00 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Green, to increase its lead to 38-20. The Lady Lions proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 50-29 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 24 points.

UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Walker, to expand its lead further to 64-41 with 2:29 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bulldogs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 67-49 edge. UAPB’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team’s 17 third-quarter points.

Alabama A&M proceeded to take a 74-71 lead before UAPB went on an 11-0 run to seize an 82-74 lead with four seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. UAPB took advantage of two Alabama A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
