UAPB Women Hoops: Peat Dominates, Defense Stings Alabama State in 85-52 Win

PINE BLUFF, AR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team scored 35 points off of turnovers on the way to an 85-52 victory over the Alabama State Hornets at home Monday.

The Golden Lions (7-8, 2-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who had 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Coriah Beck tacked on 15 points and Zaay Green helped out with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals.

UAPB shared the ball well in Monday’s game, racking up 26 assists on 30 made field goals. Individually, Kaila Walker dished out the most for the Golden Lions with seven assists and Corina Carter also chipped in with five assists of her own.

UAPB forced 32 Alabama State turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Monday’s game. The Golden Lions turned those takeaways into 35 points on the other end of the floor. Kourtney Rittenberry‘s five steals led the way for UAPB.

How It Happened

UAPB started out the scoring by going on a 16-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Peat, to take an early lead with 5:31 left in the first quarter. The Golden Lions then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 33-11 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 33 points close to the basket.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 3:29 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 43-22. The Golden Lions kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 45-24 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, UAPB continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-32 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jelissa Reese, to expand its lead further to 65-32 with 2:33 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hornets had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 69-41 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 20 of its 24 points in the paint.

UAPB started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 78-41 with 6:39 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-52 win. UAPB took advantage of seven Alabama State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
