UAPB Women Hoops Peat and Reese Flirt with Double-Double, Yet Lady Lions Fall to Texas Southern on the Road

HOUSTON, TX – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team took a 65-63 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 85-80 to the Texas Southern Lady Tigers on the road Saturday.

The Golden Lions (7-9, 2-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. Coriah Beck added 17 points and Jelissa Reese chipped in as well with 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Reese pulled down eight offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 26 boards and turning them into 22 second chance points.

UAPB did a great job disrupting Texas Southern shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Maori Davenport led the way individually for the Golden Lions with two rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-14, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Beck, to take a 19-16 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-18 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

UAPB built that first quarter lead to 31-29 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:41 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Demetria Shephard, to increase its lead to 37-29. The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Golden Lions still enjoyed a 41-38 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.

Texas Southern then took a 57-55 lead following intermission before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to grab a 60-57 lead with 1:53 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 65-63 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.

Texas Southern then erased the UAPB lead in the game’s final quarter for an 85-80 comeback victory. UAPB got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring three fast break points.
