UAPB Women Hoops Extend Their Streak To Three Games in 69-55 Win Over Mississippi Valley State

PINE BLUFF, AR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team kept Mississippi Valley State to just 20 percent from deep in a 3-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 69-55 victory over the Delta Devilettes at home Saturday.

The Lady Lions had three players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Coriah Beck added 15 points and five assists and Jelissa Reese chipped in as well with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

UAPB took advantage of great ball movement in Saturday’s game, piling up 20 assists on 27 made field goals. Individually, Beck lent a helping hand the most for the Lady Lions with five assists and Raziya Potter also contributed with four assists of her own.

The UAPB defense held Mississippi Valley State shooters to only 38.6 percent from the field, including 20 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After falling behind 17-8, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 1:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Peat, to narrow its deficit to 17-13, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.

Mississippi Valley State kept adding to that lead, building a 23-18 advantage before UAPB went on a 9-0 run to take a 27-23 lead. The Delta Devilettes cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.

UAPB wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 17-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Beck, to expand its lead further to 46-27 with 4:03 to go in the third. The Lady Lions held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 54-35 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 25 points in the paint.

The Lady Lions then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
