UAPB Women Hoops Comes Up Shy of Upset Over Oregon State 85-74

CORVALLIS, OR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team went into the half beating Oregon State 46-33, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 85-74 to the Beavers on the road Monday.

The Golden Lions (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaay Green, who had 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Coriah Beck tacked on 16 points and Demetria Shephard chipped in as well with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals from the bench.

The UAPB offense was strong from deep, pouring in 10 threes on 31 attempts. Green hit four treys for the Golden Lions in the contest.

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 11-9 advantage, UAPB went on a 9-0 run with 5:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Shephard, to increase its lead to 20-9. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 25-15 advantage. UAPB got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for seven of its 25 total points.

UAPB built that first quarter lead to 28-17 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 7:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Green, to increase its lead to 34-17. The Beavers cut into that lead, but the Golden Lions still enjoyed a 46-33 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

UAPB then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Beavers 63-55 entering the fourth.

Oregon State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-61 advantage before UAPB went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Beck’s three, to shrink the deficit to 74-69 with 4:37 to go in the contest. Oregon State responded and outscored the Golden Lions the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 85-74. UAPB fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
