UAPB Men’s Hoops: Defensive Effort Leads Golden Lions Over Mississippi Valley State 83-77

ITTA BENA, MS —The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) men’s basketball team held Mississippi Valley State to just 20 percent from 3-point range in an 8-for-40 shooting performance on the way to an 83-77 win against the Delta Devils on the road Saturday.

The Golden Lions had four players score in double figures, led by Kylen Milton, who put together a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Caleb Stokes tacked on 14 points off of the bench and Joe French chipped in as well with 14 points.

UAPB offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down nine threes on 24 attempts. French was the most prolific shooter for the Golden Lions, draining four treys in the contest.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 9-5 advantage, UAPB went on an 8-0 run with 14:05 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Rashad Williams, to increase its lead to 17-5. The Golden Lions then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 40-28 advantage. UAPB got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 40 total points.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by French’s three, to grow the lead to 61-47 with 11:07 to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 83-77 win. UAPB made the most of four offensive rebounds to tack on seven second chance points out of 43 total in the period.
