Trial for alleged killer of Kevin Collins gets underway

The Capital Murder trial of the man accused of shooting and killing former Pine Bluff Detective Kevin Collins has begun. Jury selection began yesterday in the trial for Keshone Smith, who is accused of shooting and killing Collins at the Econo Lodge on North Blake Street three years ago. Smith has been help without bond since the shooting. The trial is being presided over by Judge Jodi Dennis. The death penalty has been taken off the table and the potential jurors were informed of the decision. Witnesses, law enforcement officials and various experts are expected to take the stand this week at the Jefferson County Courthouse.  The families of Collins and Smith are both attending the trial. The case is being prosecuted by Kyle Hunter and Smith is being defended by Lee Short.
