The City Council of Star City voted last week to increase sanitation rates which had not been increased since 2010.

According to the Lincoln Ledger newspaper, the rate will go from $12.50 to $14.50, an increase Mayor Paul Carter said was necessary because improvements to the system are needed and the current rate is inadequate to pay expenses.

The new rate will go into effect immediately.

In other business, the council talked about a partnership with the Star City School District on a community walking trail. The newspaper reported that Alderman David McCoy went to the site which would be located inside the fence of Jimmy Brown Elementary and estimated it would take about 10 lights in the area. McCoy said the school district has applied for a $30,500 grant to pay for the walking trail. The city will be responsible for half the cost which can include in-kind work.
