A tragic accident near Mile Marker 24 near Jefferson on Thursday night has claimed the life of 18-year-old Taariq Connor, a former Watson Chapel High School student and current member of the Philander Smith University Panthers baseball team. Another player involved in the crash remains hospitalized with serious injuries, according to officials.
Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley confirmed the fatality to Deltaplex News on Friday morning.
Philander Smith head baseball coach Kelvin Battles expressed heartbreak over the loss in a statement on social media:
“Last night, I received a call no coach or parent should ever have to take. Two of my baseball players were involved in a car accident. Tragically, one of them didn’t make it, and the other is in the hospital facing a long recovery ahead. Out of respect for the families, I won’t be releasing any names, but I’m asking for prayers for my players, their families, and also for the Philander Smith family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Officials later identified the victim as 18-year-old Taariq Connor, a first-year student from Pine Bluff who was recruited out of Watson Chapel High School by Coach Battles.
In a statement released Friday, Philander Smith University said Connor was remembered as a dedicated student-athlete whose “positive spirit and standout skills” made a lasting impact both on and off the field.
“As a freshman, Taariq quickly became known for his dedication and positive spirit, as well as his standout skills on the baseball diamond,” the university wrote. “He had a close circle of friends and, in his short time on campus, had already made an impact as a scholar with infinite promise and potential.”
The university also asked for continued prayers for Caleb Isabel, who remains hospitalized, as well as Caleb Winfield and JaTwan Wells, who were also involved in the crash.
Philander Smith President and CEO Dr. Maurice D. Gipson issued a message of unity and support for the campus community:
“In moments like this, we lean on our faith and on one another. We pray for Taariq’s family, Caleb Isabel and his family, their teammates, Caleb Winfield and JaTwan Wells who were involved in this tragic accident — and for every member of our Philander Family as we begin to heal together.”
Watson Chapel head football coach Steven Heard also shared a heartfelt message remembering Connor’s character and leadership.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of former Wildcat and now alum Taariq Conner. His absence will be deeply felt,” Heard said. “He was among the first players I met when I was hired last year. He was an exceptional young man who consistently showed respect and gratitude. He had something that many lack — accountability. He stood up for what he believed in and accepted when he made mistakes. An exceptional student, athlete and an even more exceptional young man. I will cherish the memories we shared. Watson Chapel players and coaching staff will miss him dearly. RIL RIQ.”
Counseling services and support are being made available to students, faculty, and staff as the Philander Smith University community mourns the loss of one of its own.
Authorities say the investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
