A proposed ordinance that would change the way the Planning Commission notifies residents of potential changes in their neighborhood will be on the agenda for a final vote when the City Council meets for the first time in September.
The proposed ordinance, sponsored by Council Members Lloyd Holcomb Jr. and Bruce Lockett was read twice during the council meeting Monday.
If adopted, it requires that all property owners located within 300 feet of the property whose use is being changed to be notified at the expense of the person requesting the change.
The proposed change in the notification procedure came about after Trinity Episcopal Church, which is located only a few blocks from Holcomb’s residence, reached an agreement to allow a drug rehabilitation facility to locate in what was formerly a private school that the church sponsored.
After Monday’s meeting, Holcomb talked about the proposed ordinance.
The proposed ordinance also provides that residents who disagree with the decision of the Planning Commission may appeal to the City Council and if that fails, seek a judicial remedy.
