By a vote of 7-1 Monday, the Pine Bluff City Council approved an ordinance creating the City of Pine Bluff Convention Center and Hotel Public Facilities Board that will be involved in efforts to acquire, construct and equip the hotel adjacent to the Convention Center.

Council member Bruce Lockett, one of the sponsors of the legislation told Deltaplex News what he understood about the ordinance.

According to the ordinance, the completion of the convention center and hotel project “will result in additional convention events and the attraction of increased tourism and economic activity to the city.”

Council Member Steven Mays Sr., cast the only no vote on the ordinance.

Also approved Monday was a resolution allowing the street department to buy a used Hi-Cube Van TV Inspection vehicle to help perform work.

Council Member Ivan Whitfield sponsored the resolution and talked to Deltaplex News about the vehicle the street department is getting.

According to the resolution, the city will pay $279,433 for the vehicle . The cost of a new vehicle was put at approximately $320,000.

Also approved was an ordinance setting out time frames for the placement of political campaign signs will not require permits for which a fee is charged.
