The Pine Bluff Animal Control Shelter has reopened after being shut down since August of this year due to the spread of canine distemper which is usually deadly and can lead to long-term nervous system damage. After the initial closing, the shelter asked for assistance from its partner Best Friends Animal Society to manage the disease and get the shelter back up and running.

Marcus Graydon the Director of Animal Control met with Deltaplex News about their reopening and the process they had to go through to reduce the number of euthanizations and increase the number of animals they save.  Cathy Overfield is assisting with the Shelter from Best Friends and will be assisting them for six months to maintain a 90% save rate.

She explained more about what Best Friends offers.

Since reopening, the shelter has been able to provide treatments for the animals they’ve taken in and are currently at a 97% saving rate for the month of December.

The shelter is also offering free adoptions for the month of December to give back to the community and Graydon explained more about that.

Graydon explained that anyone interested in adopting but would like to see what the shelter has can visit their Facebook or look the shelter up on petfinder.com. For more information about how to adopt an animal call 870-543-5135 or visit them Monday through Friday at 901 N. Haverty Street between 1 pm and 5 pm.
