People who have active misdemeanor warrants in Desha County have until April 30 to take advantage of a new program that will allow them to avoid being arrested.

According to the McGehee Dermott Times-News, the McGehee Police Department and Desha County Sheriff’s Department are cooperating in an amnesty program affecting anyone with an active warrant.

To take advantage of the amnesty, people with warrants can take canned food to the District Court office where they the fine, either in McGehee or Dumas and they will be given a new court date.

“No jail, no bond, no warrant fee, just a new court date and chance to get on a news path,” Desha County Sheriff Mitch Grant said.

To confirm the presence of an existing warrant, contact the McGehee District Co9urt or the Dumas District Court.

Donated food items will be distributed to local food pantries and needy families in Desha County, the newspaper said.
