Sheridan’s inaugural Independence Day celebration drew strong community participation despite weather concerns and extreme heat, according to Mayor Cain Nattin, who also shared updates on upcoming city business during a recent interview.

The city’s holiday festivities began Wednesday with Movies at the Park, which served as the kickoff to the Independence Day celebration. Nattin said organizers adjusted the movie’s start time to 8:30 p.m. after storms began approaching the area.

The decision allowed attendees to enjoy the full movie before rain and stronger winds moved in. Nattin described the event as a success and said the city hopes to host similar movie nights in the future.

Following the movie night, Sheridan hosted its first-ever Fourth of July parade. Nattin said participation exceeded expectations for the inaugural event, with what he described as a parade that was well-sized for both the weather and the community.

Before Friday’s festivities, city officials met with members of the City Council, the fire chief, the county’s Office of Emergency Management director and the county judge to discuss safety concerns stemming from the high heat index. As a result, some booths and outdoor activities were canceled to help protect attendees.

Despite those changes, the city continued with the parade, giveaways and a photo booth, and Nattin said the event attracted a strong crowd. He added that organizers hope to make the parade an annual tradition.

When asked about the parade competition, Nattin said winners had already been selected but had not yet been notified at the time of the interview. The city planned to announce the winners on its Facebook page the following day after notifying participants. He also thanked the three volunteer judges selected by the Sheridan Chamber of Commerce, who evaluated entries in categories including floats, golf carts and horses.

Looking ahead, Nattin previewed the agenda for the Sheridan City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, at 6 p.m. at Sheridan City Hall.

The meeting will begin with updates from city officials who attended the Arkansas Municipal League Summer Convention. Nattin, Councilmember Cook, Clerk-Treasurer Kerry Smith and City Attorney Ed Kuhn are each expected to share information and ideas they learned during the conference that could benefit Sheridan.

Council members will also hear updates from McClelland Consulting Engineers regarding proposed revisions to the city’s zoning code and planning efforts. Additional agenda items include discussions on potential wastewater treatment improvements, requests to apply for grant funding, updates on city construction projects and proposed amendments to the city’s personnel handbook.

Nattin also provided an update on the city’s Parks and Recreation renovation project. He said Sheridan has selected a construction management firm, signed contracts and hired an architect, with the project now in its design phase.

If the current timeline remains on schedule, construction could begin during the third quarter of the year, with work potentially starting around Oct. 1. The city is targeting a reopening of the renovated facility by Memorial Day 2027, when officials hope to celebrate the completion of the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Nattin said the project’s construction manager is expected to provide additional updates during next month’s City Council meeting as planning continues.
