A free community event focused on tobacco prevention and nicotine education will be held June 13th in Pine Bluff.
The American Lung Association and the Arkansas Tobacco Education Initiative, in partnership with Be Well Arkansas, will host a Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wilma Anderson Center at 4701 Dollarway Road. The event is open to the public and will feature games, prizes, refreshments and activities for attendees of all ages.
Organizers say tobacco cessation specialists and representatives from participating organizations will be available to provide information about quitting resources and answer questions about tobacco and nicotine use.
The event is part of an effort to promote tobacco-free living and increase awareness of the health risks associated with tobacco products. According to the American Lung Association, tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in Arkansas, contributing to nearly 5,800 deaths each year.
The organization also reports that 23.9% of Arkansas high school students use tobacco products, a statistic health advocates cite as evidence of the continued challenges posed by nicotine addiction among young people.
Residents seeking information on tobacco cessation, prevention resources and the health effects of nicotine products are encouraged to attend.
