Many people in the communities surrounding White Hall, in addition to many across the state and country, are still in shock about the news of the untimely death of former Arkansas Razorback and NFL quarterback and White Hall head football coach Ryan Mallett.

Mallett died Tuesday in Destin, Florida in a drowning incident.

One of the people still in shock is former White Hall Superintendent Doug Dorris, who was instrumental in hiring Mallett to lead the Bulldogs football team.

Dorris spoke with Greg Horne on the Oldies 101.3 morning show Wednesday morning to discuss the hiring process when Mallett was hired and more.

Dorris said that due to things that had happened in Mallett’s past he had a bit of a “bad rep” coming into the White Hall job. Dorris spoke about why they chose to move forward with the hire despite that.

With the Arkansas Activities Associated mandated two-week “dead period” coming to an end in a week and a half, and with football season quickly approaching the White Hall administration and school board will be faced with the daunting task of naming a new head football coach following this tragedy. Dorris said Superintendent Gary Williams has some tough decisions coming his way due to this.

Dorris said they knew last season would be tough due to a small senior class, but he felt like the team really bought into what Mallett was selling. He spoke more about that.

Dorris said that Mallett had matured as a human during his time at White Hall.

Dorris finished by sharing what he believes Mallett would want during this time for his football team.
