The building located at 101 Walnut, formerly known Ernie’s Exxon Service Station, was set to be demolished on Monday, August 23, after the owner did not take action to redevelop the property during the past two years.

In 2018, a fire, which the Pine Bluff Fire Department determined to be arson, left the building dilapidated. An unknown suspect had broken into the service station, stole a set of 24-inch rims, and started the fire.

Since then, the building became part of the Go Forward Pine Bluff and Pine Bluff Urban Renewal Agency initiative to remove blight or dilapidated properties from the community. Due to delays, the building was not fully demolished until Wednesday, August 25. The demolition pleased area businesses. Ray Barns, the owner of Look De Look detailing shop, located across the street from the old Exxon location, told Deltaplex his thoughts.

Regarding the changes GFPB is making in Pine Bluff for local businesses, Barns responded.

When asked what should replace the demolished buildings, Barns stated that he would like to see a big-name gas station and buildings for the youth.
