Last week, the Chief Judge of the Arkansas Supreme Court, John Dan Kemp paid a visit to Jefferson County where he visited with other judges and court staff.

Kemp is retiring from the bench at the end of next year and currently, three people have announced that they are running for the position. Two of the three are currently members of the Supreme Court.

Unlike other states where judges are appointed, judges in Arkansas, including those on the supreme court are elected and in recent years, large amounts of money have been spent on those races to try and influence the election.

Circuit Judge Rob Wyatt, the administrative judge for the 11th West Judicial District which is Jefferson and Lincoln Counties was asked about that when he was a guest on the Oldies 1013 morning show Wednesday.

He said that Arkansas is not unique in the way they elect judges, with some states having elections, and in other states, judges are appointed by governors or apply for judicial positions through a board or commission.

He then went on to say this.

Morning show host Greg Horne told Wyatt that he does not get as worked up about the results of local elections as he does state-wide elections and Wyatt responded by talking about the way local candidates approach elections.
