A-State and UT Martin Play to Scoreless Draw in Exhibition Match

MARTIN, Tenn. (8/13/21) – Arkansas State kicked off the 2021 season with a 0-0 draw in an exhibition match at UT Martin Friday evening.

UT Martin, playing in a third exhibition match ahead of the season, out-shot the Red Wolves 10-8, but both teams placed two shots on goal. A strike by Haley Husted in the 25th minute was saved by the Skyhawks keeper and true freshman Keelyn Peacock aimed for the bottom left corner in the 31st minute, but was stopped with a save.

Fifth-year senior Megan McClure played the first half of the match and recorded a save. Shortly after a corner kick by the Skyhawks, P. Gelinas targeted the top right of the net, but McClure made the stop. Sophomore Olivia Luther opened the second half in goal and logged 32 of the 45 minutes with true-freshman Damaris Deschaine closing out the match between the posts. Following a free kick, Deschaine was tested on a shot by E.van der Vliet, but made the stop to keep the game scoreless.

The Red Wolves saw 26 players log important minutes ahead of the season opener Thursday. A-State enters the regular season with 11 true-freshmen and three transfers joining the returning 10 starters and 15 letterwinners. A-State has posted a 21-11-5 (.635) mark over the last two seasons, with 20 shutouts in those 37 matches.

The Red Wolves begin the season Thursday at Washington State with match time set for 9:00 p.m. (CT) in Pullman, Wash. The three-game road trip to start the season includes fixtures at Eastern Washington (Aug. 21) and Missouri State (Aug. 26) before hosting Ole Miss on Sunday, Aug. 29 in the home opener.
