LITTLE ROCK (AP) Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Friday afternoon said the number of positive tests for the novel coronavirus had increased to 96 in the state.

The Arkansas Department of Health reported that there were cases of the virus at three nursing homes: Apple Creek Nursing and Rehab in Centerton, The Villages of General Baptist West in Pine Bluff and Briarwood Nursing Home and Rehab in Little Rock.

Older people and those with compromised immune systems have shown to be more vulnerable to the virus. Sixty-two of the infected in Arkansas are at least 65 years old. Eight are children.

The Department of Health reported Friday afternoon that 203 people were under investigation for the virus, meaning they were showing symptoms and have risk factors such as travel to an infected area. Another 548 people were being monitored by health officials.

Arkansas has extended the statewide closure of public schools to April 17 and banned dine-in services at restaurants and bars to limit the spread of the virus. The state has made $12 million in grants available for aid groups, nonprofit groups and midsize businesses affected by the outbreak. It’s also providing $4 million in loans to help businesses avoid layoffs.
