As the Little Rock Zoo prepares to temporarily close next week due to extreme temperatures across Arkansas, Delta Rivers Nature Center officials say they plan to remain open and continue normal operations.
Trenton Powell, director of Delta Rivers Nature Center, said staff will continue monitoring conditions throughout the week and taking precautions as temperatures rise.
Powell explained how the center is preparing its animals, staff and visitors for the upcoming heat.
Staff members will also take additional precautions, including limiting outdoor time and checking on one another throughout the day.
Powell said employees will avoid spending extended periods outside, with staff members generally limiting outdoor work to about 30 minutes at a time.
Visitors will also be monitored for signs of heat-related issues while at the center.
While other attractions have adjusted operations due to the heat, Delta Rivers Nature Center plans to continue scheduled programming, including its annual Marksmanship Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 1.
The event, which began in Pine Bluff, is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade and includes competitions involving activities such as archery, air rifles and slingshots.
