Less than two days after Arkansas and Arkansas State played in their first-ever football matchup, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is pushing to make the game an annual tradition in Little Rock.

Sanders sent a letter to the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State University boards of trustees on Monday, calling for the two schools to schedule a yearly game at War Memorial Stadium.

“This special and long-overdue occasion united the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State University in a way that fans across Arkansas have dreamed of for decades,” Sanders wrote. “You hold the ability to ensure this game is not a one-time event, but the beginning of a lasting tradition.”

The Razorbacks beat the Red Wolves 56-14 on Saturday in the capital city. The matchup marked the final game under Arkansas’ existing agreement to play at War Memorial, and the Razorbacks have no future games scheduled there.

Sanders, a Little Rock native, said she wants that to change.

“As Governor, a native of Little Rock, and a lifelong football fan, I am calling on you to make this historic matchup an annual event,” she wrote.

Sanders urged both schools to work together to “secure this tradition for the people of Arkansas.”
