Three people were killed and six others injured Thursday when a pickup truck that was eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 struck a group of motorcyclists from Louisiana.

According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, the accident was reported at 6:07 p.m. in Crawford County near Dyer.

The report said the group of seven motorcycles was westbound in the left lane when they were struck by the truck, which was driven by Ivan Santos, 29, of Norman, Oklahoma.  Santos and a passenger in his ruck were injured, as were four motorcyclists who were from Lafite, Gretna and Slidell, Louisiana.

The injured were taken to hospitals at Fort Smith and UAMS.

The three dead included a married couple from Slidell, La., and a woman from Terrytown, La.

The deaths bring to 187 the number of people killed on the state’s highways so far this year.
