A Pine Bluff man with what prosecutors described as a lengthy criminal history was arrested Tuesday after a high-speed chase involving police and sheriff’s deputies that ended when the man’s car was disabled with stop spikes.

Edward Gibson, 25, was driving a red Nissan Altima that Sheriff’s Sgt. Courtney Kelly reportedly saw fail to stop at a stop sign at 46th Avenue and Main Street and Kelly attempted to make a traffic stop.

During a court hearing Thursday, Deputy Prosecutor Mircha King described what happened next.

Kelly reported that police deployed the stop spikes at Harding Avenue and Main Street and the vehicle finally stopped at 16th Avenue and Poplar Street.  When the vehicle was searched, police found a black and pink backpack in the trunk that contained two mason jars containing a total of 62 grams of suspected marijuana, a digital scale with marijuana residue, and an extended magazine for a weapon.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $25,000 bond for Gibson after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with felony fleeing, possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Gibson said he would hire his own attorney.
