A report of two men fighting in the street in the early morning hours Tuesday resulted in the arrest of one of them after he allegedly stabbed the other.

Gregory Petties, 64, of Brinkley was taken into custody after police responded to 1900 S. Elm Street at 2:40 a.m., in response to a reported disturbance and fight.

Deputy Prosecutor Mircha King during a court hearing Wednesday explained what police found.

When Petties was questioned, he said the victim walked up to his vehicle and opened the door, and said he got out to protect a female who was a passenger in the vehicle. He said the male walked to the back of the vehicle and begin to throw things out and the two men began fighting. He said at some point he got the knife and stabbed the victim.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $20,000 bond for Petties after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with second-degree battery.

He was ordered to have no contact with the victim until the case is settled.
