UAPB Announces New Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Dr. Andrea Stewart has been named Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). Dr. Stewart has served as UAPB Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since August 15, 2022. Prior to her interim position, she served as the Dean of the UAPB School of Arts & Sciences from 2013 to 2022.

As the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) from 2013-2022, Dr. Stewart provided leadership to 12 academic departments. She served as coordinator/director of the social work program for 25 years, leading its initial accreditation and subsequent reaffirmations. Dr. Stewart served as interim Chairperson of the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences and President of UAPB’s Faculty and Staff Senate. She successfully supported the Department of Nursing faculty to begin a new nursing program in 2015.

UAPB Chancellor Laurence Alexander said, “Dr. Stewart has a great passion for higher education and our students’ success. With her extensive experience in academic administration, I look forward to the collaboration within academic affairs and across the university that will continue to build upon the tradition of excellence at UAPB.”  Dr. Stewart provided oversight, support, and assistance to five SAS academic programs that achieved new and reaffirmation of accreditation status. Since 1990, she has secured more than $7 million in grant contracts/sub-awards to support child welfare training and education and provided $5,000 stipends for students to complete internships at the Department of Human Services, the Division of Children & Families (DCFS).

Dr. Stewart received a Doctorate in Social Work from Howard University, a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), and a Bachelor’s Degree in sociology with a minor in psychology from UALR.

Dr. Stewart supports and encourages high performance in teaching, research, and service. She supports the goals of academic affairs and promotes online education. Dr. Stewart’s research interests and scholarship focus on teenage pregnancy, single parenthood, religiosity, assessment, and program evaluation. Also, she is a published poet and enjoys creative writing.
