On May 9, voters in Pine Bluff are being asked to extend the five-eighth cent Go Forward sales tax for another seven years and to add a three-eighth cent tax devoted to public safety.
The current tax is set to expire next year and on Wednesday, Tommy May, the retired president and CEO of Simmons Bank and one of the people credited with creating the Go Forward Pine Bluff program was a guest on the Oldies 1013 morning show.
May was asked why the issues were put on a ballot now, rather than waiting until next year.
May said the King Cotton High School Basketball tournament is one example.
Morning show host Greg Horne said May talked about finding someone else to take over operating the King Cotton tournament and that would be a huge undertaking.
The two newest members of the Pine Bluff City Council, Lanette Frazier, and LaTisha Brunson both attended the candidate forums and May said they learned not only how to get elected but what they would need to do to be effective legislators.
