The University of Arkansas has reached a new milestone, reporting a record $252.9 million in research expenditures for 2025, marking an increase of more than $90 million over the past four years.

University leaders say the growth reflects continued investment in research initiatives and partnerships that support innovation across Arkansas and beyond.

“This record reflects our land-grant commitment to research that improves lives across Arkansas,” Chancellor Charles Robinson said. “Together with our faculty and staff, they are helping generate knowledge and develop solutions that enhance quality of life, strengthen key industries and contribute to a more prosperous future for our state.”

The university ranks among top-tier research institutions globally and continues to expand its focus on areas considered critical to both the state and the nation, including semiconductors, advanced materials and metabolic health.

Robinson has set a long-term goal of reaching $500 million in annual research expenditures as part of the university’s “Reaching Higher” initiative.

Provost Indrajeet Chaubey said faculty research is gaining international recognition and plays a key role in advancing the university’s mission.

“Our faculty are gaining international prestige and recognition for their research, scholarship and expertise,” Chaubey said. “Their work is instrumental in fulfilling our land-grant mission of building a better world through innovation and discovery.”

The university has also made significant investments in research infrastructure, including the development of several major facilities in recent years. These include the Institute for Integrative and Innovative Research, the Multi-User Silicon Carbide Research and Fabrication Facility and the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Margaret Sova McCabe said more than $136 million in university resources has been invested in applied research facilities since 2021.

“This remarkable investment, combined with a concerted effort to modernize and professionalize our research support services, is paying dividends,” McCabe said. “Arkansans will reap the benefits.”

University officials said each college and school is contributing to the institution’s research growth. Leaders within the College of Engineering pointed to increased funding as a key factor in attracting top faculty and expanding research capabilities.

“The university’s investment in growing our research enterprise has been transformative for the College of Engineering,” said Kim Needy. “These resources allow us to recruit and retain top-tier faculty, staff and students and position us to lead in areas critical to Arkansas and the nation.”
