With the school year now underway, the Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office is urging motorists to watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists through a statewide “Drive Aware” campaign running from August 18 to August 24.
The initiative is designed to raise awareness about roadway safety for vulnerable road users. Despite a slight improvement in recent years, officials say the risks remain high.
Pedestrian fatalities in Arkansas hit a 10-year high in 2020 with 81 deaths. In 2023, fatalities declined by 9%, but 74 pedestrians still lost their lives. The state also recorded 11 bicyclist fatalities in 2023 — nearly double the total from 2022. Urban areas remain particularly dangerous, accounting for 70% of pedestrian deaths and 67% of bicyclist deaths.
“Our goal is simple yet crucial — encourage road users across the state to help protect the lives of pedestrians and cyclists who are often at a higher risk on our roads,” said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar. “With school starting back all across the state, we want everyone following safety guidelines and staying alert. Together we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure Arkansas is a safe place for all road users.”
The “Drive Aware” campaign highlights key safety reminders for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians:
-
Drivers are urged to avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and stay cautious at crosswalks.
-
Cyclists are encouraged to wear helmets, check their brakes, and follow traffic laws.
-
Pedestrians are reminded to use sidewalks, cross only at designated areas, and remain alert to traffic.
